Gather

  1. How many different types of jobs have you had?

  2. Has your job ever changed so much, it’s basically a new career, even though the title may have stayed the same (or you stayed at the same company)? What was that like?

Explore

  1. Re-read Matthew 14:22-33

  2. Ritchie’s been talking about “getting out of the boat” and stepping out on faith. What keeps us in the boat sometimes? (Fear? Clinging to the past?)

  3. What are some stories in the Bible of people “taking a step” on faith?

  4. What are some stories of people in your life of people “taking a step” on faith?

  5. Read Philippians 3:12-14. How is our Christian life like a race? (What’s the goal, beyond baptism?)

Grow

  1. What is your boat? What do you feel like God is calling you to change?

  2. What’s holding you back from stepping out of your boat?

  3. What are 2-3 risks in your life that could help your faith grow?

  4. When making a change, we sometimes forget that to add something in one area of our life, we have to subtract something elsewhere. If making a change in your life requires adding something, what are you willing to give up?

  4. Read Jonah 1:1-16. Does this sound familiar to the story in Matthew?

  5. In your experience, when do you find yourself losing focus and taking your eyes off Jesus?

  6. How does your relationship with God change in moments of crisis? Do you turn to God more, or less?

Grow

  2. If Jesus can walk on water, rescue Peter, and calm the storm, what do you need him to do in your life right now?

  3. Are you hesitant to let Jesus do amazing things in your life? (Why or why not?)
